Origin Guernsey: The Tumaini Fund was founded in Guernsey in 2003 by Drs. Susan & Douglas Wilson, both practicing doctors. During a sabbatical spent working in Kagera, the Wilsons were shocked at the abject poverty of families devastated by AIDS, which left widows, grandparents and orphans, often simply older children caring for younger siblings. The Wilsons returned to Guernsey to spread the message of the desperate situation in Kagera. So the Tumaini Fund began.

U.S.A.: As the Tumaini Fund expanded its work in Kagera, it became evident that more help was needed to support this vital mission. After two years of dedicated effort by many volunteers, The Tumaini Fund USA was registered with the IRS and in 2010 its launch was sponsored by Trinity by the Cove Episcopal Church in Naples, Florida. In March of 2011 Dr. Susan Wilson travelled again to Naples for an annual fundraising to reach more hearts for help for her beloved orphans.

Canada: In the summer of 2010, the Tumaini Fund was introduced to the community of Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island, supported by St. Mary’s Anglican Church. Many volunteers from St. Mary’s and sister churches in Parksville, Lantzville and Nanaimo began making much needed clothing and blankets for the orphans and families, and now enjoy meeting regularly for group sessions. In September of 2010, St. Mary’s welcomed Dr. Susan Wilson who travelled from Guernsey to personally introduce her charity and explain its work and hopes for the future. With Tumaini Canada’s growth and increasing interest and support, we are currently working to have the charity fully registered in Canada.

Dr. Susan Wilson is the heart and soul of Tumaini , and in Dr. Wilson’s own words: “The work is inspired by Jesus…we are 100% convinced that he is willing this work forward and has enabled all that has been achieved so far.”
